Director, Brightspace Foundation
Nick Read has been the Director of the Brightspace Foundation since 2011. The Foundation is a sustainable development charity based in, and largely focused on, Herefordshire. His previous career includes research into technology transfer in the biosciences, national Food Policy and Research Adviser for the National Farmers Union, Senior Technical Adviser for the National Farmers Union and Director of a national charity supporting those in rural areas suffering from stress. Ordained in the Anglican Church in 1995 he became full time Agricultural Chaplain in Hereford Diocese in 1998 and he combines volunteer chaplaincy with his work.
The Foundation is developing a Sustainable Route Map for Herefordshire which monitors indicators volunteered by local stakeholders as relevant to Herefordshire’s sustainable development and assessing whether these show an improving or deteriorating situation. This information is used to inform local policy decisions. Nick is able to facilitate policy discussions as Chair of Herefordshire’s Local Nature Partnership and convenor of the County’s Sustainable Food and Tourism Partnership. He also Chairs “Farm Herefordshire” a consortium of twelve organisations working with the land-based sector to improve soil and water management in the county.
