Member, OR Society Pro Bono OR Committee
Graham Rand, recently retired after 40+ years at Lancaster University, is a member of the Operational Research Society’s Pro Bono OR committee. He was chair of the committee for the OR60 conference, held in September 2018, having previously chaired the committee for OR26 in 1984. Graham was editor of the Journal of the Operational Research Society from 1991-96, and is currently editor of the Society’s magazine, Impact.
He has served IFORS (International Federation of Operational Research Societies) for many years, including being Vice-President from 1998-2000. For IFORS he was the Editor, International Abstracts in Operations Research, from 1979-91, Editor, OR 1987 Conference Proceedings, Chairman, OR 1990 Conference Programme Committee, and Managing Editor, International Transactions in Operational Research, 2001-2005. He is currently chair of IFORS’ Publications Committee. He has been very supportive of the development of OR in developing countries, particularly in Africa. He created the Operational Research Hall of Fame.
Graham has also served the American professional society INFORMS, particularly with their prestigious Edelman award, for which he has been on the jury, coached finalists, including the 2008 winner, Netherlands Railways, and verified several applications. In 2012 he was host of the Edelman Awards Gala. He was President of Omega Rho, the international honor society for O.R., from 2012-14, after several years as European Director.
For his international service to OR he was honoured with the Companionship of Operational Research, one of the highest awards bestowed by the Operational Research Society, in 2006.
